Dan Schawbels First Book Me 2.0 Build a Powerful Brand to Achieve Career Success Personal Branding has really come a long ways in the last few years!   I remember when William Arruda and Kirsten Dixson wrote the bible on personal branding, back when there were really just a handful of personal branding blogs. Fast forward to today and we have (probably) hundreds of blogs that have some element of personal branding, and the latest book on the subject from Dan Schawbel, who is someone who has completely immersed himself in the power of personal branding.   Hes a pretty dang good networker, to boot (doesnt it make sense that personal branding and networking go hand-in-hand?). Dans popular blog on personal branding, PersonalBrandingBlog, has evolved into an authoritative resources on personal branding, with a history of interviews from some amazing people, as well as (newer) guest posts from others.   He created the Personal Branding Magazine, and has been interviewed by some great publications.   He has definitely carved out his corner of expertise (combined with savvy SEO, hell be around for a long time in this space!). What should you expect from this book?   Honestly, I don t know, since I havent seen it.   But based on everything Ive seen from Dan in the last couple of years, I can only guess this will be a terrific resource for you as you think about, and work on, your personal brand.   Here are some highlights he sent me via email: A proven 4-step process for building a powerful brand (discover, create, communicate, maintain). Note that the title they gave it was Controlling your reputation is vital, which isnt as strong as the title for this post. Being you are my audience and should get special privileges, below is the article I wrote, which touches on the new form of reputation management, what you can do starting today and a future mobile outlook. I started preaching this a few weeks ago. This is a very important article, with a few tips, but it acts as a RED ALERT notification that you need to do something to protect yourself. - When it comes to building a strong corporate, product or personal brand, the internet has become the Holy Grail for connecting with customers, friends and co-workers. In this digital age, you must decide which face you want to show to the world. Every action you take can be heard, seen and damage your brand in an instant. You can treat the internet as a personal prison or a world of everlasting opportunities. Companies, as well as people have actually lost control of their brand, as blogs, podcasts and social networks have given permission for the masses to start conversations about you, whether positive or negative. A quarter of internet users visit social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn (TNS, June 08’) and there will be 145 million people reading blogs by 2012 (eMarketer, May 08’). Now from your mobile phone, you can take a picture or record a video and have it streamed right to a branded webpage seamlessly. These live feeds don’t enable you to freely edit or copy and paste. Any action you take now can be on the internet live or be recorded for distribution. ATT now offers JuiceCaster, which allows you to accomplish this same feature for a small fee. Mobility SCREAMS reputation management The mobile web will become the number one access point to the internet in the future. As people live life on the run and start to live a life of connectivity and engagement, cell phones will hold our reputation. For example, you could be sitting in an interview and have a recruiter hold their cell phone out to you with your Facebook picture or a blog entry that negatively portrays your brand. You could be littering by a street corner and someone could be broadcasting that live on the internet. With the power of embedded video, that single clip can be moved and mashed up and appear on 1,000 different websites in a single day. By 2012, there will be 975 million mobile users (Computerworld, May 08’) and 30% of European social network users access them through a phone (Telecom Paper, June 08’). If you want to achieve success as an individual or a company, you need an online presence, but at the same time, you must nurture it and maintain it. This is the biggest challenge of the future and one that companies will devote significant budget to. You cannot escape these conversations, only see them as an opportunity to face the truth, be honest and monitor your reputation constantly. The days of corporate marketing spin are coming to a close. Your name, picture and logo are all you have now. It’s time for you decide how to best represent yourself, so when people talk about you, they understand and can relay that message to others. Stop what you’re doing this moment. Conduct a search on your name. What do you find? Is what you discover factual or inaccurate? Develop a strategy to monitor your reputation, communicate with the people who write about you and always be true to your personal or corporate values.

Salary Negotiation Tips Part 2 My summer reading includes career books, and I recently checked out Salary Negotiation Tips for Professionals by Ron Caryl Krannich, Ph.D.s.   Here are two more mistakes they say many professionals make when negotiating salary offers. Mistake #2: Forgetting to calculate the value of benefits and only focusing on the gross salary figure.   The Kranniches point out that benefits can account for up to 40 percent or more of your total compensation.   Be sure to ask about the value of your benefits when you get to the point of seriously considering an offer.     Later, the company may offer to pay for education or certifications, both of which have an immediate value and a future value (your worth in the market.) Mistake #3: Focusing on your needs and not the employer’s.   This is a common mistake for workers when they consider asking for a raise, as well.   It’s important to realize that most of the time, salary is based on the job and its value to the company, and not on the person in the role.   There are times when your talent will give a significant boost to what you’re offered; for example,   if yours is a skill that is hard to find or will be hard to replace.   For most workers, that’s simply not the case.   The Kranniches recommend basing your negotiation on research and outcomes from your work, rather than personal need.   Mentioning any personal financial issues will usually present exactly the wrong image to your prospective employer â€" that you are more focused on your personal needs and goals than those of the company. Here are the Kranniches’ recommendations for savvy negotiations: Approach the job hunt as a process of finding the right fit for your skills and interests.   Focus on pursuing your passion and creating value.   Conduct careful research on the current market value of your skills and the job you’re pursuing.   When asked about salary during the interview process, you’ll be able to say with confidence, “ My research indicates that this position should pay around $60,000, and based on what I know so far, that would be within my range of salary expectation.” Focus on the job and the needs of the company.   Savvy negotiators are focused on the other person’s needs and goals.   Learn to speak the language of the employer and help them understand how hiring you will help them achieve results, save money, or solve problems.   When they see clearly what value you will bring to the company, they will be willing to pay more for your services.

Allow me to state the obvious. Getting a job in today’s market isn’t easy. It’s even more difficult for young graduates and people looking to join the corporate world without any prior experience. Everyday people all over the country are submitting their resumes into job banks hoping and praying that they will get a response. It’s tough out there. That is, it’s tough if you’re not using social media. Its tough if youre not willing to put in the hours required to land the job of your dreams. You see, the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and expect different results. Many people are using the same resume, submitting it to the same job bank and expecting different results. Simply put, it’s insanity! I recently met with a guy who had submitted more than 200 resumes in the past six months and informed me that he only had four interviews. Well I’m here to tell you, there is a better way. There are many jobseekers out there using the traditional job search methods and as a result they are finding little to no success. Yet, social media is making it easier to find the right jobs, and the right people who can help you get them. More and more companies are going to websites like LinkedIn, Google, and Facebook (Use Timeline to your advantage) to find their next wave of corporate talent. If you are on the job hunt these are some of the places you need to be. Here are a few tips that can give you a social media advantage: First, figure out what industry you’re looking to break into and how you can do it. Are you looking to get into Politics? If so, you’re going to be interested in finding any politicians on social media and follow them on Twitter or connect with them on LinkedIn. If you’re looking to break into the corporate world of management and business, LinkedIn is a great way to search various organizations to identify key decision-makers who can help open the door to your new career. From there track down these key people on Twitter or LinkedIn and offer an innocent and polite introduction to yourself â€" While your at it, ask them something that will allow them to share their knowledge upon you. The fact that you’re engaging with them on a deeper level than simply asking for a job will help you develop an authentic relationship. By doing this, you may have started what could be a long-term professional relationship. This is a great approach for any young person looking to find a mentor in a specific industry. This advice has helped get many of my friends and colleagues where they are today believe it or not. Social media gives us an opportunity to connect and most importantly increase our visibility to a group we would only meet at a white-tie event. That said, once you have identified people who are doing what you want to do or are in the businesses you want to work for don’t harass them. Keep an eye on what they are doing and focus on developing an authentic relationship with them one day (or tweet) at a time. When someone Googles your name what is the first thing to show up? Is it a random person in a random country? Is it a humiliating image of you on Facebook? Or is it simply a list of random links with no personal relevance? None of these are the best answers. The best answer is one that ensures that when someone searches you on Google, they find exactly what you want them to find. More and more are recruiters doing background checks by searching our names online (usually on Facebook). If you’re able to control your image effectively online you will find it easier to control your fate in the job hunt. That final piece about taking charge and managing your professional image is an important one. If you’re looking to break into a professional field, you’re going to want to present yourself on social media in a professional manner. That’s right, you need to recognize that school is over and it’s time to start building and developing a personal brand that you can be proud of. Yes, that means having a head shot on LinkedIn and not a picture of you and your friends’ on a beach or doing shots before a big night on the town! Remember, setting up a LinkedIn account and connecting with key individuals will not guarantee you a job. To do that, you are going to have to put in the time and understand the art of the hustle. Although digital channels have changed everything, the power of meeting someone face to face is still a necessity. Thus, I encourage you to take your professional conversations from being behind the screen of a laptop to being face to face in a coffee shop or even their office.
